The Gunflint Art Pod met March 27th at the studios of Dave and Nancy Seaton. Attending the meeting were Kim Dayton, Rene Block, Kris and Chad Kieper, and Laurie Hanson.
After a slippery walk from the house to the garage Dave Seaton shared his workshop space, where he creates handcrafted guitars from exotic and local wood. He explained his process of lengthy client interviews, followed by pattern design and then the building of the instrument. Molds and wood jigs are used along with heat to flex the wood and shape it into the desired form. In a given winter he can make about 6-8 instruments.
We “penguin strolled” back to the house and went to the basement next to visit Nancy’s Glass studio. As we descended the stairs to the studio we passed the rock archive. Many of Nancy’s glass creations are anchored by local rocks which she collects and keeps a stash of on the staircase walls. Nancys studio is small but mighty, very well appointed with all that she needs in its own spot. She showed us her glass kiln and explained its computer firings raising temperature slowly to anneal the glass, then a quick rise to correct temperature for the particular project. Nancys Art is a strong mix of science, technology and design and color.
We ended our gathering with food and conversation followed by the sharing of recent works.
Our April meeting will be hosted by Kris Kieper at her studio, Date and Time to be determined.
