I paint scenes from nature and life with a focus on expressive realism, light and shadows, and vibrant color contrasts.

Extended Artist Statement

Lauren Burton is a painter, special education teacher, and musician who lives in Knife River, Minnesota. Largely self-taught as a visual artist, Lauren paints daily — whether on a large canvas or in a small watercolor journal — drawing inspiration from the landscape around Lake Superior's North Shore. Her work explores the interplay of light and shadow, the vibrancy of color relationships, and the dynamic lines and angles found in both nature and architecture.
Lauren holds a B.S. in Music Therapy from Tennessee Technological University and an M.Ed. in Special Education from Vanderbilt University. Before turning her creative focus to visual art, she was a singer-songwriter, choral singer, guitarist, and jazz soloist.
Her preferred media are acrylic and watercolor, often working en plein air or from her own photographs. Lauren’s style leans toward alla prima realism, emphasizing expressive marks and rich, vibrant color. In addition to landscape and architectural subjects, she enjoys capturing the unique character of pets and painting energetic scenes with figures in motion.
