Extended Artist Statement
My work is a network of narratives influenced by architecture, archeology, language, time and
how humanity interacts with it all. Socioeconomic disparities, cultural absorption, evolution and
dissolution are among other concerns I address. Many of these subjects can clash and yet
blend in harmony. The use of symbolism and intentional discontinuity propels my narratives
forward. As a result much of my work is a push/pull experience for the audience.
I work to illustrate my concepts referencing old and new languages and iconography, imagined
formulas, and graffiti. I work on larger surfaces in order to have enough room to set out large
narrative network. The ways in which language evolves through time and social change is
fascinating to me. Understanding a language is vital to understanding a culture. How the
language evolves and emotes within a culture can reflect the influences of other societies
coming in contact with it, through economic trade and/or conflicts. Throughout my work are
graffiti words, phrases and gibberish to indicate cultures, languages and their overlap.
Combining other contemporary iconography is a direct reference to symbolism used in graffiti
and hyrogliphics. Graffiti has been around since the beginning of communication to mark
territories, tell a story or simply to exert individual existence like “Kilroy was here.” Other areas
of my paintings appear to have algebraic formulas scribbled out on a black board, offering the
imagined as formidable, as math too, is a language found within all societies. Archaeological
and architectural indications are a significant part of this painting inspired by our first visit and
subsequent move to Duluth. Having been homeless before and always seeming to struggle to
make ends meet, let alone finding safe housing for my family, has influenced my work. I love the
idea of storytelling to teach, but part of learning is exploring and creating your own narratives. I
invite the viewer to create their own story. For me the audience is as influential on the artwork as
the brushstrokes. Thus my paintings are not complete until the audience views, feels, and
creates a story.
My painting methodology allows me to explore the various concept combinations that interest
me more quickly than I can in other media. Searching for patterns and an understanding of the
world around me is a wellspring. Sharing my insights through both physical and my paintings is
a privilege that I am honored and grateful for. My artwork is a display of my belief in the
connections between nature, humanity, industry, economics, and social issues.
