As an oil painter, my brush transforms canvas into a visual story, preserving a memory.

Extended Artist Statement

Drawing upon the tradition of 18th and 19th-century realism and naturalism, my paintings explore the breathtaking landscapes of the North Shore of Minnesota and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. From the dramatic rocky cliffs and windswept shores of the North Shore, with its vast boreal forests, to the picturesque beauty of the Apostle Islands, I capture the essence of these unique regions, depicting their physical features – past and present – with a keen eye for detail. My work seeks to evoke a sense of awe and a deeper understanding of the natural world, capturing the full spectrum of its moods – from the tranquil moments of calm on Lake Superior to the fierce energy of a storm-tossed shore. I am particularly drawn to capturing the interplay of light and shadow, revealing the subtle changes that occur across the seasons and highlighting the profound impact of time on these remarkable landscapes. My primary focus and philosophy remain rooted in preserving the natural composition of these diverse regions and documenting places that may one day be lost or forgotten.
