I’ve been creating my whole life. It’s breathing; if I stopped I wouldn’t be me. Glass has always intrigued me. I feel I’m working in partnership with it—together we express our ideas.

I’ve been creating my whole life. It’s breathing; if I stopped I wouldn’t be me. Glass has always intrigued me. I like the physicality, the technicality, the fluidity, the solid intense color of it. I feel I’m working in partnership with it—together we express our ideas.

It’s science and heart. Chemistry creates the colors, and the physics of temperature and gravity affect the shape. While sometimes I create pieces that are straightforward and should come out exactly as planned. Mostly I let the glass give me a little surprise. I’ll put colors together that should have a chemical reaction while firing, or I’ll stack layers up to let gravity and heat move things around. I like an expected surprise.

My natural surroundings also surprise and intrigue me. I take these observations into the studio and see where they intersect with the skills I have.

I have lived at Hungry Jack Outfitters on the Gunflint Trail with my husband Dave since 1991. We’ve raised our 2 sons and helped thousands of campers
navigate the secrets of the Boundary Waters.
