As an abstract artist, my improvisational quilts emerge organically and explore value, repetition, and contrast.

Extended Artist Statement

I am an abstract artist whose medium is improvisational quilt making. Through my designs, I explore value, repetition, and contrast. Designs emerge organically. I might start with an idea or concept found in nature, media, found objects, or from the textiles themselves. From that inspiration, I begin using a rotary cutter in lieu of pencil, creating lines and shapes as I go, each piece cut and created free hand.
To make quilts this way, I need to trust myself and trust what is emerging. I need to trust my own attraction to order while also welcoming the liberation of lines that aren’t straight and seams that don’t match.
My quilting is organic, linear, and dense. I often incorporate several thread colors to enhance the overall design. My background in clothing construction adds quality to my artistic constructions.
